Getting the right event to attend might be very frustrating because you don’t want to land at an event that would totally be a waste of your time, energy and resources. Imagine how devastating it would be if you have to travel all the way from Ikorodu to Lekki to attend an event only to discover that the event and its speakers were not worth the stress.
Here are basically two ways you can categorise every event that you come across
- High Event: Some of the characteristics of high event s are solid crowds, engaging and though provoking discussions, well prepared speakers and excellent choice of location. You leave such events feeling super inspired and motivated to do more for yourself because you have learnt something valuable. Apart from the speakers dishing out useful information, you also get to meet other industry experts that you can leverage on for more exposure, partnership and expansion.
- Low: It’s so obvious that a Low event is the direct opposite of a High event and some of the things you’d notice at such events is the fact that most of the people you’d find there are confused and the lack clear focus or direction on which way the event should go. At such events, your only thought would be how to escape from there so that you can engage in something more productive.
Now that we know the major difference between a high and Low events here is how you can recognise one before even signing up for it.
- Topic and Speakers: This is the first thing you should consider before signing up for an event. You have to be sure that that the topic resonates with your interest. You should also do a personal research on the speakers so as to ensure that the speaker is up to the task of doing justice to the topic. You should however be aware that the topic might not be of interest but the speaker chosen might make the event a viral one.
- Organisers: It is also important to do a background check on the organisers of the event. If the organisers have a solid reputation for delivering excellent events then there are good chances that this one might not be different.
- Paid or free: If an event is paid and they are still getting strong attendance, then you know that people value the event and that attendance will be strong. With a free event, you can never be sure how many people will attend but if the speaker and the organisers are credible ones, you are such to get a lot of crowd because know that’s a great opportunity to network. For instance, the population of Social media week Lagos keep increasing even though most of the sessions are free. This is because people know that there are so many to be gained at such gatherings.
- Reason Fir Attendance: Your reason for wanting to attend events would also help you pick what event to attend. You have to be sure if you are attending events to learn more about a topic, to meet new people in your industry or to just meet up with the la crème de la crème of your industry. Attending an event because all your friends are attending might turn out bad because you’d be left out of the train eventually.
Please note that using these tips might not totally save you from being in some low events but you’d be able to avoid them more than before. At the same time, you could check for the best events happening around on eventchrome
